The conflict serves as the ongoing narrative in the film, but the focus is on the people who are living through what has been termed a genocide. Through the voices of refugees, displaced persons, and in particular women and children, who are always among the most vulnerable in any conflict situation, this film seeks to provide space for the marginalized victims of atrocities to speak and to engage with the world. Additionally, the film probes the history, culture, and heritage of Darfur as a means of deepening understanding of the crisis and complicating easily assumed perceptions of the conflict (such as a matter of race, ethnicity or religion).

7:30 p.m.
Where: The Junior League, The
Ballroom,
1811 Briar Oaks Lane, Houston

The story of the Palestinian search to
establish a state begins in the period
between the two world wars, when British
colonial control of the region became
increasingly unpopular and power began
to shift toward the United States.
Palestinian leaders were unable to
achieve the long-cherished goal of
establishing an independent nation—a
critical failure that set the stage for
many of the problems occurring in the
decades since 1948. By frankly
discussing the reasons behind this
failure, Khalidi offers a much-needed
perspective for anyone concerned about
peace in the Middle East.
Rashid Khalidi is the Edward Said
Professor of Arab Studies and director
of the Middle East Institute at Columbia
University. He previously taught at the
University of Chicago and has written
more than eighty articles on Middle
Eastern history and politics. His study
includes the role of the press in the
formation of a sense of identity and
community and in the way narratives of
self and others have interacted over the
past two centuries in this conflicted
region. His latest book, The Iron Cage:
The Story of the Palestinian Struggle
for Statehood, published by Beacon
Press, will be available for purchase
and signing at the program.

Professor
Ami Pedahzur

how can intelligence agencies of

might our domestic intelligence agencies

intelligence tools developed during the
Cold War relevant for coping with
terrorism today?

- Iraq and Back: Inside the
War to Win the Peace
By Kim Olson, United States Air Force
(ret)
When: Tuesday, November 07, 2006
Time:
Registration: 11:30, Program:
12:00 - 1:30 p.m.
Where: The Westin Galleria Hotel,
5060 West Alabama, The Monarch Room
HWAC members $30, non-members $40. Table
Cost $500.
Air Force colonel Kim Olson came to Iraq
shortly after the end of the initial
military campaign. As Jay Garner’s
executive officer, she was part of the
senior leadership circle charged with
three tasks: to reconstruct Iraq’s
infrastructure, provide humanitarian
assistance, and lay the foundation for a
democratic process to take hold.
Colonel Olson tells what went right and
what went wrong, in a gripping,
first-hand account of the early days of
the reconstruction effort. From the
decisions of political leaders and
military commanders to everyday
encounters with the Iraqi people and
informal conversations with soldiers,
Olson weaves together military,
political, and humanistic insights.
Many of the stories she tells are known
to only the handful of people involved,
including details of early meetings with
tribal leaders to discuss building a
coalition government. Her haunting
descriptions of Saddam’s killing fields
and malnourished children in the town of
Umn Qasr, untouched by the Oil-for-Food
program, will remain with readers long
after they close the book.

- Women and Islam in the Middle
East Today
Political crisis has turned a critical
Western eye toward Arab and Muslim
societies. Among the many objects of
curiosity is the veiled, ostensibly
oppressed Muslim woman. Professor
Alsowayel will consider these topics:
why Muslim women are the subject of such
scrutiny, what their roles are in
society, whether it is religion that
defines the role of women, and whether a
modern society can exist where there is
no professed equality between men and
women.
Dr. Dina Alsowayel will offer a broad
historical and analytical overview of
the Middle East, focusing on critical
events that underlie today's polemics.
Dr. Alsowayel, who previously worked for
20 years for a Saudi-based oil company,
is associate director of the Women's
Studies program at the University of
Houston and an instructional assistant
professor in the history department.

Literary Voices from Iraq
Dr. Sinan Antoon and Dunya Mikhail,
renowned literary scholars from Iraq,
will weave their experiences together to
present the challenges writers and poets
face both in Iraq and in exile. They
will discuss the history of literature
in their native country, how it has been
carried through to the culture today,
and will share their own poetry.
Poet, novelist, filmmaker and
translator, Dr. Sinan Antoon produced
the film, “About Baghdad,” a journey
into the lives of Iraqis after decades
of oppression, violence, and wars. He
was born in Baghdad, but left shortly
after the Gulf War. A senior editor at
Arab Studies Journal, he received his
Ph.D. from Harvard and currently serves
on the faculty at New York University,
where he focuses on Iraqi literature and
culture studies.
Dunya Mikhail has published four
collections of poetry in Arabic,
including The War Works Hard, and one
lyrical, multi-genre text, The Diary of
a Wave Outside the Sea. Facing
increasing threats from the Iraqi
authorities in the late 1990s, she fled
first to Jordan, then to the United
States, where she received a master’s
degree in Near Eastern studies from
Wayne State University. In 2001, she was
awarded the U.N. Human Rights Award for
Freedom of Writing. She speaks and
writes in Arabic, Aramaic, and English.

“Party of God”
7:00 p.m. Meet the director and Q&A
Hizbollah has long been identified as a
terrorist group by the state department,
responsible for waves of kidnappings,
suicide bombers and attacks against the
United States and Israel. It was
originally established in 1982 by the
Iranian Revolutionary Guards as a
militia group in Lebanon, part of their
policy of exporting the Islamic
revolution. But Hizbollah or the “Party
of God” has now also entered mainstream
society – complete with its own
uniformed army, political party,
schools, and a satellite TV network. It
receives substantial amounts of
financial and training assistance from
Iran and Syria, estimated to be worth
about $25-50 million per year, and has
widespread acceptance in Lebanon. What
are the goals of Hizbollah? What is its
attraction and how has it broadened its
influence?
Lewis has two decades of experience as
an investigative reporter, correspondent
and producer of broadcast news. He
worked for 11 years as a
reporter/producer of magazine and
documentary pieces at CNN and before
that in the documentaries and
investigative unit at ABC News. His
production company, David Lewis
Productions, was launched in 2001. His
work has received numerous journalism
awards, including CableACE, Emmy awards
and the Joan Shorenstein-Barone award.

6:30 - 7:30 p.m.
Where: The Junior League, 1811 Briar
Oaks Lane, The Ballroom
Co-sponsored with the Bilateral US/Arab

The rise of Hamas and Hizbollah pose
significant new challenges for the
United States and Israel. Both once
regarded as Islamic resistance movements
on the fringes of their societies, they
have now secured both broad acceptance
and considerable political power. Their
success, writes Khouri, reflects the
perceived response by each to the real
needs of their constituents. Will they
now shift from guns to governance? What
issues and challenges do the United
States and Israel face in light of the
rise of these and other fundamentalists
groups?
A Palestinian-Jordanian, who was
educated in both the Middle East and the
United States, Khouri is currently the
executive editor of the Beirut-based
newspaper, The Lebanon Daily Star.
Khouri was the editor-in-chief of The
Jordan Times for seven years and, during
that time, wrote articles for The
Financial Times, The Boston Globe, and
The Washington Post. A frequent
commentator on CNN, C-SPAN and other
television programs, Khouri is also a
senior associate at the Maxwell School
of Citizenship and Public Affairs at
Syracuse University and a fellow of the
Palestinian Academic Society for the
Study of International Affairs in
Jerusalem.

Featuring: H.E. Samir Shakir Mahmood Sumaida’ie, Ambassador of Iraq to the United States of America
Cosponsored with The Houston Forum and the World Affairs Council.
The issue of Iraq is dominating our nation’s political debates in what promises to be a pivotal election year this November. Please join us as the Ambassador of Iraq shares his nation’s perspective on the future of his country. With announcements from the finance minister that Iraq will invest $4bn in oil infrastructure and refineries and a planned 2007 budget of $33bn, Iraq presents tremendous opportunities for US companies. But will the coalition government be able to maintain security and prevent the spread of civil war and what role will US troops play now that the responsibility has been officially handed over to the present government?
Appointed in April 2006, Ambassador Sumaida’ie became the first Ambassador of Iraq to the United States. He has been in opposition to the Baathist regime for many years. He founded numerous political organizations and conferences highlighting the Iraqi opposition movement. His private sector career spans two continents representing firms doing business between the UK and China since 1978.

Saving Iraqi Culture
Dr. Nada Shabout, Assistant Professor of
Art History at the University of North
Texas, will discuss the damage inflicted
on Iraq’s cultural artifacts by the
current war and the need for their
restoration. Considered one of the
world's leading authorities on
contemporary Iraqi art, Dr. Shabout
traveled to Iraq in 2003 to construct a
list of artworks missing and stolen from
the Iraqi Museum of Modern Art which was
damaged after the US invasion. There are
up to 8,000 pieces of art missing from
this Baghdad museum. However, only about
1,300 are accounted for, many of which
are badly damaged. She recently received
a $10,000 grant from the American
Academic Research Institute to continue
her research and, as she says,
“reconstruct an archive out of nothing.”

in Emerging Middle East Markets

Mohsen Sazegara, a leader of the Iranian
student movement against the Shah,
returned to Iran in 1979 at the side of
Ayatollah Khomeini. After Ayatollah
Khomeini gained control of the Iranian
government Sazegara served as the
founder of the Iranian Revolutionary
Guard Corps and as managing director of
the National Radio of Iran. After
working in several government positions
throughout the 1980s Sazegara left the
Iranian government in 1989 disillusioned
with the revolutionary government. Since
then Sazegara has worked to bring reform
to Iran. In 2001 Sazegara attempted to
run for President but his candidacy was
rejected by the Guardian Council. After
this rejection Sazegara attempted to
initiate a referendum on replacing the
Iranian constitution. He was
subsequently arrested in 2003 where he
underwent several hunger strikes which
led to a deterioration of his health and
in 2004 he was permitted to go to London
for medical treatment. Sazegara
continues to work on a National
referendum for constitutional reform and
helped to launch an online petition
which has garnered the support of more
than 35,000 signatories as well as 300

Demonstration in front of the Israeli
Consulate
During the past
month, the U.S.-backed Israeli invasion of
Lebanon has killed more than one thousand
people, injured more than three thousand
people, and displaced almost one million
people. Despite the grave humanitarian
crisis, Israel continues to attack relief
aid convoys along with many other civilian
targets. Although the United Nations
Security Council has passed a resolution
calling for an end to the fighting, Israel
appears determined to kill and injure as
many people as possible before any
cease-fire takes effect.
The Houston Emergency Coalition Against
Israeli Aggression is calling a
demonstration. The focus of the
protest will be the victims of Israeli
aggression in Lebanon and Palestine, with
special remembrance of the massacre at Qana.
The Coalition demands that Israel
immediately withdraw from Lebanon and cease
all military attacks on Gaza. We demand
that Israel pay reparations for the
catastrophic destruction it has caused in
Lebanon. We further demand that the US cut
off military aid to Israel in light of its
violations of the US Arms Export Controls
Act. The Coalition supports the right of
self-determination for the Palestinian
people and the end to the illegal occupation
of Palestine.
We urge the broadest possible participation
in the protest. Please join us and show your
solidarity with the people of Lebanon and
Palestine.
When: Friday,

Time: 7:00 pm - 10:00 pm

The river civilizations of ancient

shared cultural similarities such as the
growth of urban centers, the development
of writing and the creation of a network
of long distance trade routes for
supplying luxury goods. The materials
used for many objects from the Royal
Tombs of Ur exemplify the extent of this
long distance trade - lapis lazuli from
Baluchistan, silver from Anatolia, and
carnelian beads from the Indus Valley,
the area of modern India and Pakistan.
Some scholars have further suggested the
possibility of foreign craftsmen living
and working in ancient Mesopotamia.
Join us for a dinner treat you will not
soon forget as well as learn of the
history and culture of Mesopotamia.

July 10, 2006 - Al Raja
Palestinian Folkloric Dance Troupe in
Houston
When: Monday, July 10, 2006
Time: 7:30 pm
Where:
University of Houston, Cullen
Performance Hall
In Ramallah a group of young folk
dancers is anxiously awaiting the coming
of summer when they will travel to the
United States to share their culture and
help Americans understand who they are
and how they live. The teens are
members of the Al Raja Palestinian
Folkloric Dance Troupe. They will visit
congregations and special events of the
Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA),
performing in Chicago, Omaha, San
Francisco, San Antonio, and other
cities.
Al Raja means “hope." The dancers are
Christian and Muslim teens from the
Evangelical Lutheran School of Hope in
Ramallah. The school is a ministry of
the Evangelical Lutheran Church in
Jordan and the Holy Land (ELCJHL).
Members of the dance troupe are eager to
meet American youth and see how they
live. They have much to share with
Americans about life in Palestine. One
way these teens express their culture is
through traditional dance. They practice
for hours each week. The Al Raja Dance
Troupe is only about two years old, but
many children in Palestine learn the
traditional debka dancing from an early
age. In 2004 the dancers went to Norway.
Travel from the occupied Palestinian
lands is a challenge.
This event is co-sponsored by the Arab
American Students Association (AASA) at
the University of Houston, and the
Houston chapter of the
American Arab Anti-Discrimination
Committee (ADC Houston).

As the Palestinians struggle to shape a
new Hamas-led government western nations
are forced to weigh their options and
evaluate their ability to support the
Palestinian people. One after another
nations are withdrawing their aid to the
Palestinians; meanwhile, the people of
Palestine have begun to sell off their
most valuable possession just to make
ends meet.
How will the outcome of this election
affect the peace process, the
relationship with President Mahmoud
Abbas, and the future economic
development of the West Bank and Gaza?
Ambassador Safieh will discuss the
election of Hamas, the status of
Palestinian-American relations and the
challenges facing the Palestinian
people.
Ambassador Safieh was appointed head of
the PLO Mission in Washington on October
27, 2005. He previously served as Deputy
Director of the PLO Observer Mission to
the United Nations in Geneva, staff
member in the office of President Yasser
Arafat, PLO representative to the
Netherlands (1987-1990), Palestinian
General Delegate to the United Kingdom
(1990-2005) and to the Holy See
(1995-2005). He is the author of
numerous articles on Palestinian and
general Middle Eastern affairs.'
Ambassador Safieh was once dubbed by
Israel's Haaretz newspaper as, “the most
articulate Palestinian diplomat in
Europe, and possibly the world.”

Forward Now for Israel and Palestine?
David Makovsky, Director, Project on the
Middle East Peace Process

Thursday, June 15, 2006
Time: Registration: 6:00 PM,
Program: 6:30 - 7:30 PM

In January of this year,
Hamas, the party of the Palestinian
Islamic Resistance Movement, swept to
power. In doing so it replaced the
secular, nationalist party of Fatah, as
the majority party in the Palestinian
legislature. This dramatic shift has
created countless unanswered questions
as observers struggle to determine what
kind of impact Hamas’ ascension to power
will have on the region, and the world.
Furthermore, Ehud Olmert the Israeli
Prime Minister has pledged to implement
a plan of “consolidation” which would
lead to Israel's evacuating more than
60,000 settlers from 72 settlements and
giving up Israeli claims to over 90
percent of the West Bank. With Hamas
leading the Palestinian people and
Olmert pledging drastic changes the
future of the peace process in the
Middle East is faced with new and
complex challenges.
What changes will Hamas bring to the
Palestinian people? What effect will
this new majority have on the peace
process? How will the Israeli settlers
react to Olmert’s “consolidation” plan?
Will the new Hamas majority have a
catalytic effect on radical tendencies
in other Muslim countries in the region?
Will the Hamas government be willing to
accept Olmert’s scaled down Israel?
This is a Houston World Affairs Council
event (HWAC
members free, non-members $20).

Press Contact: Robert Pruitt, 713-526-7662, robertpruitt@projectrowhouses.org
Visible Collective uses films,
installations, & lectures to trace
migration impulses, hyphenated
identities and security panic. The
majority of Muslim migrants detained in
post-9/11 sweeps for terrorists were
from the invisible underclass of cities.
They are the recent immigrants who drive
our taxis, deliver our food, clean our
restaurant tables, and sell fruit,
coffee, and newspapers. The only time we
"see" them is when we glance at the hack
license in the taxi partition, or the ID
card around the neck of a vendor.
The detained are usually men, in various
states of "illegal" status, easily
dismissed as "law breakers." Finally,
when deported, they cease to exist in
the American consciousness. This desire
to create a sinister insider-outsider
with dubious "loyalty" has a long,
vicious pedigree, witness the 1919
detention of 10,000 immigrants after
anarchists bombed the Attorney General's
home; the 1941 internment of 110,000
Japanese-Americans; the COINTELPRO
infiltration of the Black Panthers; the
surveillance and harassment of
African-American political groups like
Deacons for Defense; the trial and
execution of the Rosenbergs; and the
HUAC Communist Witch Hunts under Senator
McCarthy.

May 15, 2006 - A Sitting
Target: America's Security Nightmare
By Clark Ervin, The Aspen Institute
When: Monday, May 15, 2006
Time: Registration: 6:00 PM,
Program: 6:30 PM - 7:30 PM
Where: The Consort Ballroom, The
Westin Oaks, 5011 Westheimer
The attacks of 9/11 have caused
American’s to consider our security in a
whole new way as the sheer determination
of the world’s terrorists forces nations
to be on constant alert. But are we
ready for the next attack? Or does our
open society make us vulnerable and a
sitting target? Mr. Ervin will evaluate
the state of security in the United
States. With an insider’s view of the
current systems, he will give an
assessment of our risk and suggest
possible improvements. Ervin will also
evaluate security concerns outside of
the U.S. and their possible effects on
U.S. interests.
A dynamic and engaging speaker, native
Houstonian Clark Ervin spent several
years in the Texas state government,
serving as the Assistant Secretary of
State, Deputy Attorney General, General
Counsel, and Director of Administration
in the office of then Texas Attorney
General John Cornyn. In December 2003
Clark Ervin became the first acting
Inspector General of the Department of
Homeland Security. Prior to his service
at the Department of Homeland Security,
Ervin was the Inspector General of the
US Department of State and the
Broadcasting Board of Governors. He is a
graduate of Harvard Law School and of
Oxford where he was a Rhodes Scholar.

May 12, 2006 - A Town Hall
Meeting on Immigration Reform: A Nation
at the Crossroads
By Michael McCaul, United States
Congressman, Tenth District of Texas
When: Friday, May 12, 2006
Time: Registration: 11:30 AM,
Program: Noon-1:30 PM
Where: The Hyatt Regency Hotel,
1200 Louisiana Street, The Imperial
Ballroom
We are in the midst of a national debate
about immigration in America. House
leaders have called for tighter
restrictions along the United States’
southern border, passing a bill that
cracks down on un-documented people,
with no mention of citizenship or guest
workers. A key Senate committee approved
a bill that would give our country's 12
million illegal immigrants a path to
citizenship, as well as create a guest
worker program. The Senate Bill will
have to be reconciled with the House
bill.
With passions running high on all sides,
legislators are divided over this
contentious issue and there is clearly
difficult work ahead. Please join the
World Affairs Council of Houston and
other area organizations as we seek
understanding of the difficult and
complex issue of immigration.
Congressman Michael McCaul was elected
in 2004 to represent Texas’ 10th
District in the United States Congress
and now serves on the following
committees: the Homeland Security
Committee, Committee on International
Relations, Chairman of the Subcommittee
on Investigations, and served as the
chief of Terrorism and National Security
in the United States Department of
Justice for the Western Judicial
District of Texas. He has introduced
bills to strengthen border security.
This is a Houston World Affairs Council event (HWAC
members $30, non-members $40).

May 9, 2006 - On the Ground
in Iran: What the Iranian People Want?
By Patrick Clawson, Deputy Director,
Washington Institute for Near East
Policy
When: Tuesday, May 09, 2006
Time: Registration: 6:00 PM,
Program: 6:30 - 7:30 PM
Where: The Consort Ballroom, The
Westin Oaks, 5011 Westheimer
On the one hand the government of Iran
is “ready to negotiate” following the
Security Council call for suspension of
Iran’s enrichment activities, while on
the other they continue to assert their
sovereign right to engage in
civilian-use nuclear programs. The back
and forth between Iran’s representatives
and those of other nations leaves one
wondering about the sentiments of those
most affected: the Iranian people.
Exploring continuities and changes,
Patrick Clawson provides the historical
backdrop crucial to understanding how
Iranian pride and sense of their history
combine to make current politics both
contentious and potentially dangerous.
Patrick Clawson is deputy director for
research of the Washington Institute for
Near East Policy. His previous positions
include five years as senior research
professor at the National Defense

variety of Houston activists, artists
and community members including Hitaji
Aziz, Autumn Knight, Chuck Jackson and

May 3, 2006 - More Than
Humanitarianism: A Strategic Approach
Toward Africa
By Princeton N. Lyman and J. Stephen
Morrison
When: Wednesday, May 03, 2006
Time: Registration: 6:00 PM,
Program: 6:30 - 7:30 PM
Where: The Junior League, 1811
Briar Oaks Lane, The Ballroom
Africa is of growing strategic
importance to the United States in
addition to being a humanitarian
concern. But a policy based only on
humanitarian concerns alone serves
neither U.S. interests, nor Africa’s. A
recent Council on Foreign Relations task
force finds that critical interests
would be better served by a more
comprehensive approach toward the
challenges facing Africa.
How can the United States best partner
with Africa on critical issues such as
economic development, democracy and
halting the spread of disease and
terrorism?
Princeton Lyman is the former U.S.
ambassador to South Africa and Nigeria
and former Assistant Secretary of State
for International Organization Affairs.
Dr. Lyman has served as Executive
Director of the Global Interdependence
Initiative, Aspen Institute (1999-2003);
Senior Fellow, United States Institute
of Peace (1999-2000); Assistant
Secretary of State for International
Organization Affairs, U.S. Department of
State (1996-98); and Director of the
U.S. Aid Mission, U.S. Agency for
International Development, Addis Ababa,
Ethiopia (1976-78).
J. Stephen Morrison directs the Africa
Program at the Center for Strategic and
International Studies Dr. Morrison has
also served on the Secretary of State's
Policy Planning staff, where he was
responsible for African affairs and
global foreign assistance issues. He led
the State Department's initiative on
illicit diamonds and chaired a review of
the U.S. humanitarian programs. He has
written and spoken widely, and testified
before Congress frequently, on a range
of issues including the rising U.S.
stakes in Africa; and the transitional
challenges unfolding in Kenya, Nigeria,
and Zimbabwe.

personal morality? How can someone with
a moderate belief of the church's
teaching cope with a growing reputation
of extremist beliefs in the same
religion, particularly when personal
freedoms are challenged? Imam
Wazir Ali and Father Tom Doyle will
address the issue of how people can
reconcile their faith when the Church
has done something they cannot condone.
Imam Wazir Ali is the Chairperson of the
Mercy Community Center Project Task
Force and the Resident Imam of the
Houston Masjid of Al-Islam. He has been
active in the Houston Islamic community
for the last 14 years during which he
served as the assistant to Imam Qasim
Ahmed at the Islamic Learning Institute
where he co-translated the book Selected
Khutbah Introductions with Imam Qasim
Ahmed.
Father Tom Doyle is a Dominican priest
who served in the Air Force for close to
twenty years as both a chaplain and an
alcohol and drug counselor. In late 1984
he became involved with the issue of
sexual abuse of children by Catholic
clergy while serving at the Vatican
Embassy. In June of 2003 he was issued
an official commendation from the
Dominican Fathers for his "prophetic
work in drawing attention to clergy
sexual abuse and for advocating the
rights of victims and abusers." In July
2005 he was awarded the "Community
Champion Award" by the Civil Justice

March 23, 2006 - "Arna's
Children" Film at Rice Cinema
A group of volunteers
and a couple of local organizations
(Houston Indymedia and the Houston
chapter of the Arab-American
Anti-Discrimination Committee) are
helping to make the following event
happen. This is a SHOCKING, MUST SEE
film!!
"ARNA'S CHILDREN" tells the story
of a theatre group that was established
by Arna Mer Khamis. Arna comes from a
Zionist family and in the 1950s married
a Palestinian Arab, Saliba Khamis. On
the West Bank, she opened an alternative
education system for children whose
regular life was disrupted by the
Israeli occupation. The theatre group
that she started engaged children from
Jenin, helping them to express their
everyday frustrations, anger, bitterness
and fear. Arna's son Juliano, director
of this film, was also one of the
directors of Jenin's theatre. With his
camera, he filmed the children during
rehearsal periods from 1989 to 1996.
Now, he goes back to see what happened
to them. Yussef committed a suicide
attack in Hadera in 2001, Ashraf was
killed in the battle of Jenin, Alla
leads a resistance group. Juliano, who
today is one of the leading actors in
the region, looks back in time in Jenin,
trying to understand the choices made by
the children he loved and worked with.
Eight years ago, the theatre was closed
and life became static and paralysed.
Shifting back and forth in time, the
film reveals the tragedy and horror of
lives trapped by the circumstances of
the Israeli occupation.

The Rest: A Glimpse into the lives of
the promised 6
The Speaker Dr. Basher Shala is going to
talk about the Description of the six
companions who were given the glad

Strong Muslims are capable of making a
choice of personality to mimic and
remain steadfast on it. While the weak
and ignorant are prone to get mislead.
So, more than ever, it is incumbent upon
us to talk to our youth, and even we
adults should reflect on the greatness
of our great Muslim heroes from our
Islamic past, who built the most
glorious and powerful civilization of
all, who took a crass society of measly
people and gave them Islam that
dramatically improved their lives. We
are hoping that you would find in it
great examples, persons and models to
follow and develop your own
personalities accordingly.

- Three
Religions and One Destiny: Religions for
a Better Humanity
Imam Yahya Hendi, Dr. Michael Signer,
and Reverend John Pawlikowski
Religions are once more becoming a
potent force in social policy in many
parts of the world, including the United
States. But the history of religion's
involvement in the social order is very
mixed. At times religious groups have
been a powerful force for justice &
peace; but at times they have been
instigators of conflict. We see both
elements still at work today. If
religion is to become a force for good
in contemporary society it must deal
with its dark side, anti-Semitism being
a prime example. If the three Abrahamic
religions, can in fact, begin to
overcome their history of conflict, they
can provide a model for similar efforts
in society at large. And working
together, they can become a powerful
force for justice in ways none of them
could do alone.
Imam Yahya Hendi
Imam Yahya Hendi is the Muslim chaplain
at Georgetown University, the first
American University to hire a full-time
Muslim chaplain. Imam Hendi is also the
Imam of the Islamic Society of
Frederick, and is the Muslim Chaplain at
the National Naval Medical Center in
Bethesda, MD. He also serves as a member
and the spokesperson of the Islamic
Jurisprudence Council of North America.
He serves as adjunct faculty member at
McDaniel College in Westminster, MD.
Dr. Michael Signer
Rabbi Signer is Director of the Notre
Dame Holocaust Project—an
interdisciplinary faculty group that
designs educational opportunities for
students to engage in the study of the
Shoah. Since 1998 he has been co-chair
of the Joint Commission on
Interreligious Affairs of the Reform
movement.
Dr. Father John Pawlikowski
Father Pawlikowski serves has the
Professor of Ethics and the Director of
the Catholic-Jewish Studies Program at
the University of Chicago. John
Pawlikowski’s scholarly interests
include the theological and ethical
aspects of the Christian-Jewish
relationship and public ethics. He has
studied the Nazi Holocaust extensively
enabling him to appreciate the ethical
challenges facing the human community as
it struggles with greatly enhanced power
and extended responsibility for the
future of all creation. He is President
of the International Council of

February 3-5, 2006 - "Islam
Invulnerable: The Making of The Modern
Muslim World"
The
purpose of this course is to encourage
Muslims to critically examine their own
historical tradition, and to promote a
more sophisticated view of the world, in
the hope that this will aid future
generations of Muslims to more
effectively confront the challenges that
face the Muslim Ummah.
The course is divided into four parts.
The first part will analyze the rise of
the Ottoman Empire, the Mughal Empire,
the Safavid Empire, as well as the
evolution of Muslim civilization in
Central Asia, Africa and South East
Asia.
The second part of the course will
examine the scientific, military, and
economic factors that contributed to the
rise of the European nations, and to the
relative material decline of the Muslim
world, as well as the role that European
Imperial powers played in dividing the
Muslim world into distinct
nation-states.
The third part of the course will focus
upon the creation of the modern
nation-states of Turkey and Iran, and

No journalistic challenge is larger at the moment than reporting the Middle East, no other story has more impact, no other place is more important now for peace in the world.
While the Palestinian/Israeli conflict is a central event in the region, it’s not the only event. Through the countless other stories, public perceptions are affected, both locally and abroad, as much by what journalists choose to cover as they are by the coverage itself.
We’ve asked a distinguished panel of journalists to discuss how they decide what to bring to their audience, which stories they cover, how they verify facts and what pressures they face as journalists in this difficult region.
Salameh Nematt, the Washington Bureau Chief of Al-Hayat International Arab Daily and the LBC, the Lebanon-based Arab satellite channel.
Yaron Deckel is considered by many to be one of Israel’s top political reporters and commentators, and has covered the trials and tribulations of Israeli politics since 1985. Since 2002, he has been reporting from Washington as IBA’s Bureau Chief.
