6, 7 & 10 - The Raid - The Untold Story
of the Gaza Flotilla |
|
Special: The Raid - The Untold
Story of the Gaza Flotilla
In May 2010, a six-boat flotilla, carrying more than 700
civilians from almost 40 countries, set sail to break the
Israeli blockade of Gaza.
But as international waters were overtaken by the Israeli
Navy, what started as a humanitarian effort soon became an
international tragedy ending with nine of the activists
dead.
The fallout from the attack triggered protests across the
Middle East and Europe, along with a shattering of
diplomatic ties between former allies Israel and Turkey. Yet
Israel defended its decision, claiming the activist were
armed and dangerous. But they also made sure to confiscate
or destroy all recording devices from the boat.
So what really happened on the Mavi Marmara? Who else was on
the other ships? What kind of humanitarian aid did the cargo
ships really load?
Thanks to exclusive footage and tapes which were hidden from
the Israeli Navy, this film shows the untold story.

with personal anecdotes telling the true story of the 1%

driven maniacs, and capitalist carnivores. He exposes
backdoor corporate negotiations with US and foreign
governments and international financial institutions, which

Nour-an-Nisa (Light of Femininity) |
|
Kristina Koutsoudas presents
Nour-an-Nisa (Light of Femininity). Noor-an-Nisa is a unique
program illuminating scenes of women and spirituality in
traditional and contemporary Near Eastern, Middle Eastern,
and North African cultures. Through the combination of
dance, music, song, poetry, and stories, this free program
presents traditional arts and cultural mores rarely seen by
the general public.
Besieged from the media with negative images of the Middle
East and North Africa, the general public does not often get
a chance to view the beautiful spirit, art and culture of
these regions. Nour-an-Nisa focuses on scenes of women (in
current everyday life, as well as from artistic & literary
sources) in traditional and contemporary Near Eastern,
Middle Eastern, and North African cultures to Illustrate
important stages in women's lives. Specific elements of
various dance traditions highlight universal qualities of
these stages. Some dances are dances of youth and beauty,
others are of maturity, development of power, love and
fertility, and others are of wisdom and devotional
traditions.
Directed and choreographed by Kristina Koutsoudas,
Nour-an-Nisa draws from rich Arab and Persian musical and
literary traditions, as well as modern and traditional folk
music.
Noor-an-Nisa incorporates a cast of seven dancers from
several countries and a small classical Arab music ensemble
of artists from Jordan and Lebanon. Dancers include Kristina
Koutsoudas, Alla Shariy; Melissa Arnold, Dorianne Castillo,
Andria Denmon, Heba Khan, and Ruth Mei-Fung Langston.
Musicians include Eyyad Abdat (Ney/Percussion) from Jordan,
Erin Foster-Ghanem (Kanoun/Percussion) from Texas, and
Missid Ghanem (Oud and Vocals) from Lebanon. Lighting design
by Kris Phelps and original costume design by Ginger
Martinez of Gin Martini Designs.

Fear, Inc.: Islamophobia in America |
|
Fear, Inc.: The Roots of the
Islamophobia Network in America
This groundbreaking, in-depth investigation conducted by the
Center for American Progress reveals not a vast right-wing
conspiracy behind the rise of Islamophobia in our nation but
rather a small, tightly networked group of misinformation
experts guiding an effort that reaches millions of Americans
through effective advocates, media partners, and grassroots
organizing. This spreading of hate and misinformation
primarily starts with five key people and their
organizations, which are sustained by funding from a clutch
of key foundations.
ELI CLIFTON is a national security reporter for
ThinkProgress.org. He most recently co-authored a
groundbreaking study on the origins and financiers of the "Islamophobia
Network" in the United States. Eli holds a bachelor's degree
from Bates College and a master's degree in international
political economy from the London School of Economics. He
previously reported on US foreign policy for Inter Press
Service, where he served as deputy Washington bureau chief.
His work has appeared on PBS/Frontline's Tehran bureau, The
South China Morning Post, Right Web, Asia Times, LobeLog.com,
and ForeignPolicy.com.

A UN vote on Palestine raises the question of whether
Palestine’s economy, its political institutions and

peace with Israel really look like? If they do not, what if
anything can Israel do to preempt new violence? Do Israel’s
own political realities contribute to a dangerous stalemate?
Bernard Avishai is an adjunct professor at Hebrew
University. He has also taught at Duke and the Massachusetts
Institute of Technology. Previously, he was the technology

Witness to War by George Gittoes |
|
Extended
through September 18, 2011
The Station
Museum of Contemporary Art wishes to announce the opening of
the exhibition
Witness to
War
by
George Gittoes.
The exhibition will open Saturday, April 16, 2011, from 7-10
pm with music and refreshments.
George Gittoes works in a variety of media: painting,
drawing, printmaking, installation, video and film. He was
born in Sydney, Australia in 1949. He has been exhibited
internationally, most notably, in
Documenta X
(Germany) in 1997. His other exhibitions include
Crows Over
Canefields
(Manila) in 1990,
Minefields
(Geneva and Moscow) in 2000,
Lives in the
Balance
(South Africa) in 2001,
Across the
Lines
(Sana'a, Yemen) in 2002, and
NO EXIT
(Aveiro, Portugal) in 2003. His films have received critical
acclaim in Berlin, MoMA NY, London, Amsterdam, Telluride and
Copenhagen. In 1998 he was the artist in residence at the
Central Academy of Fine Arts, Beijing and in 2002 was the
artist in residence at The School of Humanities, Michigan
University. In 1997 he was awarded membership in the Order
of Australia (AM) for his service to the arts and
international relations and in 2008 was awarded the degree
of Doctor of Letters by the University of New South Wales.
Gittoes' exhibition at the Station Museum in Houston is the
first major presentation of his artwork in the United
States. It reflects the life and the vision of a unique
artist who is driven to experience the tragedy of war first
hand. It would be difficult to find another artist in the
world remotely like him. Gittoes is both a fine artist and a
war artist who often risks his life in the process of making
his art. He has set up mobile studios in countries mired in
conflict and upheaval, for example, Cambodia, Rwanda,
Nicaragua, Northern Ireland, Philippines, Bosnia, East
Timor, Palestine, Congo, South Africa, Lebanon, Russia,
Western Sahara, Yemen, and Iraq. He has lived and worked in
these countries during the worst of times. His diaries are
the center of his creative thinking, and his paintings and
films expand and deepen his vision of a world torn apart by
warmongers, dictators and politicians. Recently he has been
working in the tribal areas of Afghanistan and Pakistan, the
site of his 2009 documentary film
The
Miscreants of Taliwood.
With an inspired simplicity, Gittoes explains his journey,
his vision, and his motivation in his own words: “Why do I
do it? As far as choosing the roads I have travelled, I have
this instinct that if I get comfortable, the work will lose
its ‘sting.’ So I go out of the comfort zones and into the
wilderness to find my art. In the past, it was the natural
world where predators fed on gentler creatures. In the
contemporary context, I go alone to a different kind of
human wildness--Rwanda, Bosnia, Iraq, Afghanistan--not
to contemplate nature, but the basics of humanity…”

The Life of Malcom X: An Islamic Perspective |
|
By Imam Khalid
Grig & Imam Wazir Ali
All mankind is from Adam and Eve, an Arab has no superiority
over a non-Arab nor a non-Arab has any superiority over an
Arab; also a white has no superiority over a black nor a
black has any superiority over white except by piety and
good action. These simple and powerful words of the
Prophet’s last sermon have been embedded into Islam’s call
for justice, equality and tolerance. They are words that
humble the soul and lift the spirit. Decades earlier a young
black boy was told that his dream to attain success will
never be; simply because he was born the wrong skin color.
Denial lead to defiance; defiance lead to prison and prison
lead to humbling of the soul and lifting of the spirit.
ILF Houston invites you to come and experience the
transformation of a one of the greatest personalities to
come out of the African-American community in the last 100
years. Malcolm X was a Muslim, an articulate speaker and a
dynamic personality. He is gone but his dawah still lives
on.
Join us for this in-depth one day learning seminar on the
life of Malcolm X taught by experienced and well versed
scholars.

“911’s Footprint on America”: 10 Years Later... |
|
KPFT coverage starts at 11 a.m.
When terrorists flew airplanes into the World Trade Centers
and the Pentagon on Sept. 11, 2001 precious lives were lost
forever and the sense of security Americans enjoyed in their
homeland – was completely shattered.
A decade later Pacifica Radio and Democracy Now! will
examine “911’s Footprint on America”: who have we become
because of it – as individuals and as a society.
Through the words of the people who lost their loved ones,
who fought the flames at ground zero, who sustained life
altering injuries and who suffered the consequences of being
a Muslim American, we’ll hear firsthand how America and her
people have evolved in spite of the terror inflicted upon
them.
The memorial broadcast will begin, the way Sept. 11, 2001
began for Pacifica listeners with Democracy Now!
broadcasting ‘live’ from New York, only a few blocks away
from where the planes hit the towers. Amy Goodman will take
us back to that ill fated day with actual sound gathered on
the scene as well as her own personal recollections.
Throughout the day WBAI reporters will speak to us from
locations throughout New York including Ground Zero, the
site for the controversial Islamic educational and cultural
center and other major events around the city as they occur.
Voices of the thinkers and the intellectuals who have
navigated us through this crisis over the last decade like
Gore Vidal, Dr. Cornel West, the late Howard Zinn, Noam
Chomsky and Tariq Ali will be provided by Pacifica Archives
Director Brian DeShazer. Most importantly this commemorative
broadcast will include the perspectives of the artists, the
poets, the grassroots activists and average citizens.
You will hear in a WBAI roundtable discussion led by
Attorney Michael Ratner, Director of the Center for
Constitutional Rights, the abuse of powers post 9/11 such as
domestic surveillance, FBI guidelines, criminalizing
dissent, illegal wars, Islamophobia and targeting Muslims.
Iraqi Feminist Yanar Mohammd will join KPFK host Sonali
Kolhatkar discuss how the abuse of women’s rights has been
used in the post 911 era as a pretext to justify U.S.
invasions in the middle east.
Here at home, 911 has given rise to a burgeoning rightwing
movement. KPFT’s hosts will examine the rise of the
religious right in America against the backdrop of 911.
Guest Peter Montgomery of People for the American Way will
provide insight.
Radio hosts will include Ian Masters, Margaret Prescod,
KPFT's Cassandra Ashley and others.

Murhaf Jouejati, National Defense

The Syrian crisis is at the
point of no return. After months of violent repression by the
Assad regime, protests are only growing larger and more
determined. Hama, Homs and other areas are risking grave bodily
harm to rebel against the government. As Syrians continue to
protest, the economy is close to collapse and the outlook is
grim. Is it possible for the current government to reform and
survive? If the Assad regime falls, who will fill the political
vacuum? How will the balance of power and relations with other
Arab countries change?

Commission Delegation in Damascus and served with the United
Nations Development Program. He has written extensively on Syria

celebrating and honoring Muslim women’s contributions to the
arts, sciences, religious and academic scholarship, politics and
everyday life.
Ramadan is the month of fasting, prayer, and repentance. Muslims
wake up before dawn, eat a meal called suhoor or sehri, say the
fajr (dawn) prayer, and refrain from eating, drinking, sexual
activity and smoking until sunset. They break their fast at
sunset usually with water, tea, or juice and dates, perform the
maghrib (evening) prayers and then enjoy a larger meal with
items specially prepared for the month of Ramadan. The breaking
of the fast is called the iftar.
The Pink Iftar is the only program of its kind in Houston. This
year, Dr. Elora Shehabuddin of Rice University will open the
program with a discussion about Islamic Faith and Feminism.
Muslim women of diverse backgrounds will gather to welcome women
from other faith traditions and lead a conversation about their
life experiences and perspectives.
When: August 18, 2011
Time: REGISTRATION BEGINS AT 6:30 AND PROGRAM BEGINS AT 7:15 PM
Location: CHRIST CHURCH CATHEDRAL, 1117 TEXAS AVE., HOUSTON,
TEXAS 77002

alongside engaging conversation.

Turkey
& the Arab Spring: Turkey's Evolving Domestic and Foreign
Policy |
|
Ömer Taşpinar in discussion with Ali
H. Aslan, Zaman Daily Newspaper
Brookings Institution
Co-Sponsored with the Turquoise
Council of Americans and Eurasians (TCAE)
The Arab spring has been a watershed
moment in the Middle East, inspiring
a wave change across the region. It
has also caused a major
re-evaluation of Turkey’s foreign
and domestic policy. Turkey’s goal
of ‘zero problems’ with neighbors
collides with the actions of
President Assad of Syria. How will
Turkey now relate to a president who
is accused of violently suppressing
popular protest? What can it do with
a large wave of refugees flooding
towards their border? How will
Turkey manage the changing
relationships in the new Middle
East?
Dr. Taşpinar is the director of the
Turkey Program at the Brookings
Institute, a professor of National
Security Strategy at U.S. National
War College and an Adjunct Professor
in the European Studies Department
of the Johns Hopkins University
School of Advanced International
Studies (SAIS). A well respected
author and commentator, Dr. Taşpinar
has written several articles for
respected journals and newspapers
such as Foreign Affairs, the
Washington Post, the Washington
Quarterly, Newsweek, Current
History, the New Republic Online and
Foreign Policy. Dr. Taşpinar
received his doctorate in
International Economics and European
Studies from Johns Hopkins
University SAIS.
When: July 25, 2011
Time: Registration begins at 11:30 a.m., Program: 12:00 p.m.

Terrain" Film Screening |
|
The Rice Ethnographic Film
Society presents HUMAN TERRAIN.
HUMAN TERRAIN exposes the
effort to enlist social scientists in a struggle for the
hearts and minds of America's enemies. Facing long wars in
Iraq and Afghanistan, the U.S. military adopts a
controversial new program, Human Terrain Systems, to make
cultural awareness a key element of its counterinsurgency
strategy. Designed to embed anthropologists and sociologists
with combat troops, the program swiftly comes under attack
by critics who consider it misguided and unethical to gather
intelligence and smooth the way for a kinder, gentler
occupation.
Introduction by Professor Cymene Howe, Department of
Anthropology.

Time: 7pm
Location: Rice Cinema, Rice University, Houston

Days of Rage in the Middle East |
|
J. Scott Carpenter, Washington
Institute for Near East Policy
The Middle East has been
shaken to its core as popular movements in Tunisia, Egypt,
Yemen, and Jordan demand political rights, economic reform,
democracy, and an end to corruption and repression. But old
patterns are difficult to alter and giving up privileges is
harder still. Sharing power and guaranteeing rights will
take a revolution in institutions and society. Can a
successful political transition in these countries be
managed? If so, what will be the next steps to establish a
democratic foundation? What will these changes mean to the
Arab world, the Israeli-Palestinian peace process, and the
United States? How can the U.S. and the world help the
people of Egypt?
When: Wednesday, March 9, 2011
Time: 6:30-7:30 p.m. - Registration begins at
6:00 p.m.
Location: The Junior League, 1811 Briar Oaks Lane, Houston,
Texas 77027
J. Scott Carpenter is a fellow at The Washington Institute
for Near East Policy and the director of Project Fikra,
which focuses on empowering Arab democrats in their struggle
against extremism. Mr. Carpenter has also served as deputy
assistant secretary of state in the Bureau of Near Eastern
Affairs and was named coordinator for the State Department's
Broader Middle East and North Africa Initiatives.
Previously, as director of the governance group for the
Coalition Provisional Authority in Baghdad, he helped guide
Iraq's postwar political transition and initiated a wide
array of democratic initiatives. He served as a key advisor
to C.P.A. administrator Paul Bremer, facilitating the
formation of the Iraqi Governing Council and the first
post-Saddam Hussein cabinet, the drafting and signing of
Iraq's interim constitution, and the establishment of the
interim Iraqi government.

Model Arab League |
|
The Bilateral Model Arab League
is a student leadership development program giving high
school and university students an unsurpassed opportunity to
acquire and develop practical leadership skills directly
related to the United States' and one of the world's most
vital regions. In the process, students learn about the most
important social, economic, cultural, and political issues
facing Arab leaders and ordinary citizens.
Participation in a Model is of value to all students
regardless of their academic major. Students gain invaluable
first hand leadership experience and hands-on training. They
acquire this through the Model's constant challenges and
interaction in the course of public discussion, the
application of time management skills, the use of
parliamentary procedure, and the dynamics of debating,
writing, and editing. All of this occurs under pressure and
tight deadlines that mirror the actual realities and
tensions inherent in the give-and take that comes with
activism in political affairs.
In addition, participants in the Bilateral Model Arab League
are currently able to pursue study abroad opportunities in
Yemen, Kuwait, as well as our established partner, Egypt.
When: February 26-27, 2011

Who Will Run the World? New Diplomacy for a Borderless World |
|
Parag Khanna, New America
Foundation
In an increasingly borderless and world, 21st century
statecraft will be implemented through a combination of
public and private partnerships. It’s happening already,
through organizations like the Gates Foundation. Coalitions
of governments, corporations, and civic actors, operating
more efficiently across borders, are having a greater impact
than ever before. Parag Khanna argues that America’s
influence in the future will depend on supporting the work
of non-state actors and using new models of governance.
When: February 9, 2011
Time: 6:30 PM - 7:30 PM
Location: Junior League, 1811 Briar Oaks Ln., Houston, Texas
Parag Khanna is the director of global governance at the New
America Foundation. Previously, he served as senior
geopolitical advisor to the United States Special Operations
Forces in Iraq and Afghanistan. He worked at the World
Economic Forum in Geneva, was the global governance fellow
at the Brookings Institution, and was a research associate
at the Council on Foreign Relations in New York. In 2008,
Khanna was named one of Esquire magazine's 75 Most
Influential People of the 21st Century and was one of 15
individuals featured in Wired magazine "Smart List". His
latest book, Who Will Run the World?, will be available at

January 6, 2011 - From Bad to Worse:
U.S.-Syria Policy |
|
Joshua Landis, University of
Oklahoma
Engaging Syria has been a low priority. The post of
ambassador is unfilled and there is no intelligence sharing
with the Syrians on al-Qaeda and broader security matters.
At the same time, President Bashar al-Asad cultivates
relationships with regional powers like Turkey, Iran and
Saudi Arabia. Where are we now in US /Syrian relations? How
does this impact the peace process? What is the long term
consequence of continued isolation?
When: January 6, 2011
Time: 6:00 PM - 7:30 PM
Location: Junior League, 1811 Briar Oaks Ln., Houston,
Texas
Joshua Landis teaches modern Middle Eastern history and
politics and writes on Syria and its surrounding countries.
Syria Comment, his daily newsletter on Syrian politics read
by officials in Washington, Europe, and Syria, attracts some
3,000 readers a day. Dr. Landis regularly travels to
Washington DC to consult with the government agencies and is
a frequent analyst on TV and radio. He has appeared on the
Charlie Rose Show, the Lehrer News Hour, and is a frequent
commentator on NPR. He has spoken at the Brookings
Institute, USIP, Middle East Institute, and Council on
Foreign Relations.
His most recent article on US-Syrian policy appeared this
November in Middle East Policy. He was educated at
Swarthmore (BA), Harvard (MA), and Princeton (PhD) and has
lived over 14 years in the Middle East.
