March 2, 2020  -  Age of Coexistence: The Ecumenical Frame and the Making of the Modern Arab World

Observers of the Middle East are often quick to speak of the sectarian tensions that have beset the region. However, Ussama Makdisi, Ph.D., the Arab-American Educational Foundation Chair of Arab Studies at Rice University, stresses the need to view these issues within a broader historical context. Focusing particularly on Lebanon under the rule of the Ottoman Empire, Makdisi dispels assumptions about why and how sectarian sentiments arose in the Middle East, detailing often overlooked elements of coexistence that have shaped the modern Arab world.

At this event, Makdisi will speak on his book, “Age of Coexistence: The Ecumenical Frame and the Making of the Modern Arab World,” which addresses matters relevant to understanding the contemporary Middle East. This event is sponsored by the Baker Institute Center for the Middle East.

Date: Monday, March 2, 2020
Time: 6:30 p.m. - 8:30 p.m.
Location: James A. Baker III Hall, Doré Commons, Rice University, 6100 Main St., Houston, Texas 77005

FEATURED SPEAKER

Makdisi is the author of, most recently, “Age of Coexistence: The Ecumenical Frame and the Making of the Modern Arab World” (University of California Press, 2019) and “Faith Misplaced: The Broken Promise of U.S.-Arab Relations, 1820-2001” (Public Affairs, 2010). Makdisi received the Berlin Prize from the American Academy in Berlin in spring 2018. In 2012-2013 he was an invited resident fellow at the Wissenschaftskolleg zu Berlin (Institute for Advanced Study, Berlin). Story Time in Arabic for Kids at ACC

The Arab American Cultural & Community Center (ACC) announces Story Time in Arabic! for Kids 2 to 5 years old.

We are excited to share that we will start offering Arabic Story time every Sunday at the ACC. It will be lead by one of our weekend Arabic School parents beginning this Sunday, January 55th at 12 PM.

During Arabic story time we will be reading books, singing songs and crafting with a different theme each week.

Arabic story time is geared for kids between the ages of 2 through 5 years old. Siblings are always welcomed.

This will be a fun way for parents and their kids to bond with each other, while introducing and teaching children Arabic at an early age.

Attendance is Free but due to limited space, it will be first come first seated.

***Parental participation and supervision is required during Arabic story time.***

January 9, 2020  -  Stories of the Hero’s Journey—Gilgamesh: A Hero for the Ages

Presented by Irving Finkel, assistant keeper of ancient Mesopotamian script, the British Museum, London

“Star Wars,” “The Lord of the Rings,” and Marvel Comics all owe a debt to Gilgamesh—a hero in Mesopotamian mythology and protagonist of the Epic of Gilgamesh, the world’s first epic story.

Gilgamesh, a legendary king of the Sumerian city-state of Uruk, probably ruled sometime between 2800 and 2500 BC. Immortalized as one of the seminal chapters in world literature, his story relates the struggle to become fully human through a journey of self-discovery.

This talk explains how archaeological work in the Fertile Crescent has contributed toward knowledge of the world in which Gilgamesh lived, and leads to a better understanding of the roots of Western civilization.

Location: MFAH Brown Auditorium Theater, 1001 Bissonnet St, Houston, Texas 77005
