November 18 - Rami Khalife -
Lost/Return To Beirut
A Cinematic Solo Piano Concert
LOST/Return to Beirut is a cine concert highlighting a
meeting of a feature film and a documentary with a powerful
solo piano performance. The return of Rami Khalife to his
homeland, Lebanon, is a rediscovery of his country that he
painfully left as a child because of the war, a scar of the
exodus that has never healed.
Return to Beirut is the work of painter, photographer, and
director François Rousseau.
LOST is the most personal work that Rami has ever composed
and puts the entirety of the album (13 titles) into an
image. This film is his story, his suffering and his
fragility, a sensitive, violent and inventive dialogue with
his instrument. For the film, the piano from his childhood
was lifted to the top of a building under construction, near
Byblos, to an open platform overlooking Beirut and the
Mediterranean Sea. The camera captured these bright moments
when Rami interpreted his album. The film is conceived as a
road-trip movie, going from place to place, physically very
close to each other, yet clearly distinct.
Crossing Lebanon, attentive to Rami’s look, François's
camera recorded encounters, all the contradictions of
Lebanon: the frenzy of the city, the serenity of the cedar
forests, the harshness of refugee camps, and the coexistence
of multiple religious communities.
The movie shows the tears of a young Syrian refugee girl in
a refugee camp, the beautiful energy of Chadi dancers, the
courage of a woman whose husband disappeared along with
nearly 100,000 people during the Lebanese civil war that
ended 30 years ago, and depicted by the photographs of award
winning war photojournalist Jamal Saidi. In his words
François said "I witnessed the challenge of conservative
thinking and behavior towards the choreographer and dancer
of the LGBT community, Alexander Paulikevich. I saw the
confinement in the Palestinian camps of Sabra and Shatila,
the emotion in front of the discovery of the war images of
photographer Jamal Saidi, the poetry of street artists, the
soothing of prayers, the environmental and ecological
degradation of Lebanon, and a confident, loving, and
tolerant youth in spite of the collapse, and the benevolent
eyes of a father, the great composer and singer Marcel
Khalife."
Date: Friday, November 18, 2022
Time: 7:30 pm
Location: MATCH-Midtown Arts & Theater Center Houston, 3400
Main St., Houston, TX 77002
About the Artists:
Rami Khalife is a composer and pianist, graduate of the
Julliard School of Music, New York. Rami Khalife - son of
Marcel Khalife - has been carrying on a path outside the
conventional rules and norms since the turn of the century.
François Rousseau is a painter, photographer, and a
director. Above all, he is a perfectionist, he depicts each
story-board by staging and merging his three passions in a
quasi-choreographic work that celebrates contortions of the
body and the performance of the soul. LOST/Return to Beirut
is his first film.

October 30 - Madafeh:
Hanan Awad, Photographer, Essayist
Guest: Hanan Awad
Organized by the Palestine Museum
In 1948, the year of al-Nakba or "the
catastrophe", over 750,000 Palestinians were
expelled from their homeland through
militarized displacement resulting in the
depopulation and destruction of over 400
Palestinian villages. Each village has a
unique story regarding the specifics of how
it was attacked and how its inhabitants were
forcibly expelled. For the most part, the
villages were totally destroyed - leaving
only a few that stand to this day. Ayn Hawd
and Ayn Karem are these unique cases of
villages escaping the brutal destruction
that sought to erase the physical signs of
the Palestinian presence throughout the
region. While the houses and buildings of
these two villages were left standing, the
actual Palestinian inhabitants were
displaced and are forbidden to return. The
stories of Ayn Karem and Ayn Hud are
critical for understanding the situation in
Palestine as one of settler-colonialism.
Hanan is a Palestinian-American photo
essayist, and guest host on Arab Voices,

- Gaza: The Longest Siege in Modern History,
2007-Present
You are invited to join this webinar hosted
by Darwish Visiting Professor in Palestinian
Studies
Abdel Razzaq Takriti
In 1948, the tiny Gaza Strip was cut off
from the rest of historic Palestine,
absorbing a huge number of Palestinian
refugees who were ethnically cleansed from
their ancestral lands. In 1967, it was
militarily occupied by Israeli forces, its
inhabitants suffering from a plethora of
colonial domination techniques and movement
restrictions over the subsequent decades. An
unprecedented land, air, and sea blockade
was imposed on Gaza since June 2007,
constituting the longest siege in modern
history. As the UN Special Rapporteur on the
situation of Human Rights in the Palestinian
territories occupied since 1967 has noted in
her latest report: “Israel’s apparent
strategy is the indefinite warehousing of an
unwanted population of two million
Palestinians, whom it has confined to a
narrow strip of land through its
comprehensive 15-year-old air, land and sea
blockade.” The outcome has been a harrowing
process of de-development resulting, as the
UN Special Rapporteur notes, “in a 45
percent unemployment rate, a 60 percent
poverty rate and with 80 percent of the
population dependent on some form of
international assistance, in significant
part because of the hermetic sealing of
Gaza’s access to the outside world”.
Besides this siege imposed by the Israeli
state with Egyptian state collusion, the
Palestinian people living in Gaza have been
assaulted and bombarded by Israeli forces
from land, sea, and air on a regular basis.
Their cities, villages, and refugee camps
have suffered from several Israeli military
invasions, which have led to the killing of
thousands and the maiming of tens of
thousands of Palestinians. Centering the
voices of Palestinian scholars and
intellectuals from Gaza, this panel examines
the political and historic context of this
process, accounting for its enormous human
toll but also highlighting the ongoing will
to resist this oppressive colonial present.

- Ghassan Kanafani Resistance Arts Scholarship
Anthology Release
Palestinian Youth Movement (PYM HOUSTON) is
excited to announce this year’s Ghassan
Kanafani Anthology Release & community-wide
event on Saturday, July 16 at 5 pm at the
Arab American Cultural & Community Center in
Houston, TX.
This event will commemorate the release of
the Annual Ghassan Kanafani Resistance Arts

The Ghassan Kanafani Resistance Arts
Scholarship aims to provide a safe space to
re-engage the Palestinian narrative and
explore the connections between our
community and other marginalized groups in
this country and beyond. There is a lack of
scholarships for Palestinians in North
America, so our goal is to fill that opening
and to provide opportunities to members of
our communities.
We want to empower and uplift our people who
demonstrate excellent writing capabilities
and a commitment to their community. We
invite Palestinians of all ages to this
event celebrating the 2022 Ghassan Kanafani

July 12, 14 & 16 - Building
Bridges to Counter Islamophobia
The Partnership for the Advancement and
Immersion of Refugees (PAIR) is pleased to
announce that Battery Dance of New York will
partner with PAIR Houston to implement the U.S.
premier of their Dancing to Connect
Refugee Integration program this July in
Houston, TX. The series, ‘Building
Bridges to Counter Islamophobia’ will
include Battery Dance’s signature Dancing to
Connect program for youth and spoken word
and dance performances.
Dancing to Connect (DtC) is the
award-winning arts education program
developed by Battery Dance with funding from
the Doris Duke Foundation. The Dancing to
Connect (DtC) initiative engages
participants in creativity and team
building, using the art form of dance as a
tool for building social cohesion and
resolving conflict throughout the world.
Up to 100 youth, ages 14-19, will be invited
to participate in the summer dance workshop.
PAIR program students, refugees resettled in
Houston from countries around the world,
will make up 50% of the participants. The
remaining participants will be drawn from a
cross-section of the broader Houston
community.
Battery dancers work with teams of youth
over a period of five days, for four hours
each day. Beginning with a specially
designed syllabus of creative exercises that
create a safe space, break down barriers of
distrust and discrimination, and build
mutual respect and understanding,
participants create movement phrases that
become the building blocks of a finished
piece of choreography that tell their
stories. The workshops culminate in a public
performance in which the DtC participants
experience the pride of presenting their
creation before an audience.
Dancing to Connect workshops will take place
July 11 – 15, 2022 and the final performance
and theater rehearsals will take place July
16, 2022 at Zilkha Hall at The Hobby Center
for the Performing Arts.
SPOKEN WORD AND DANCE
Ali Al-Kaabi and Ahmed Abdul-Majeed, who arrived in the U.S.
from Iraq as refugees, share their stories through spoken
word and dance respectively. The program aims to create a
space that fosters dialogue, understanding, mutual respect
and cultural exchange. Q and A will follow the performance.

- Voices Out of the Darkness with Dr. Irving Finkel
Renowned Assyriologist Irving Finkel opens a
dramatic window into the world of ancient
Mesopotamia.
Dr. Irving Finkel returns to Zoom for a talk
about the “people between the rivers” — the
Tigris and the Euphrates Rivers, that is.
Were the people of ancient Mesopotamia so
very different from us? Did they enjoy a
good dinner, rejoice in love, fling curses
at a faithless spouse, and quake in fear at
the wrath of gods? We are fortunate because
we have their most intimate thoughts,
inscribed in clay thousands of years ago,
still accessible to us. Dr. Finkel, a
renowned expert, unlocks their writing in
cuneiform, opening a dramatic window into
the ancient Mesopotamian world, revealing
lives that are every bit as complex and
human as are our own lives today.
Dr. Finkel is the Assistant Keeper of
Ancient Mesopotamian Script at the British
Museum and has spoken in Houston in the past
about Gilgamesh.

You Have Not Yet Been Defeated: Selected
Writings
by Alaa Abd El-Fattah
The
Arab-American Educational Foundation Center for Arab Studies
at the University of Houston and the Arab American Cultural
& Community Center Warmly Invite You To The Book Launch of
You
Have Not Yet Been Defeated: Selected Writings
by Alaa Abd
El-Fattah
This event will be held on Wednesday, May 4, 2022 at the
Hilton University of Houston Waldorf Astoria Ballroom, with
a light reception at 6:00 pm followed by a discussion of the
book at 6:30 pm.
Alaa
Abd el-Fattah is arguably the most high-profile political
prisoner in Egypt, if not the Arab world, rising to
international prominence during the revolution of 2011. A
fiercely independent thinker who fuses politics and
technology in powerful prose, an activist whose ideas
represent a global generation which has only known struggle
against a failing system, a public intellectual with the
rare courage to offer personal, painful honesty, Alaa’s
written voice came to symbolize much of what was fresh,
inspiring and revolutionary about the uprisings that have
defined the last decade. Collected here for the first time
in English are a selection of his essays, social media posts
and interviews from 2011 until the present. He has spent the
majority of those years in prison, where many of these
pieces were written. Together, they present not only a
unique account from the frontline of a decade of global
upheaval, but a catalogue of ideas about other futures those
upheavals could yet reveal. From theories on technology and
history to profound reflections on the meaning of prison, You
Have Not Yet Been Defeated is a book about the
importance of ideas, whatever their cost.
About the Speakers:
Sanaa Seif is an Egyptian filmmaker, producer, and political
activist. She
has been imprisoned three
times under the Sisi regime for
her activism. Most recently from the summer of 2020 until
December 2021, when she was abducted by security forces
after trying to get a letter in to her brother in prison.
Hundreds of cultural figures and dozens of institutions campaigned for
her release. She was released in December and will travel
to the
US to promote her imprisoned brother, Alaa Abd el-Fattah's,
newly published book, You
Have Not Yet Been Defeated.
Sharif Abdel Kouddous
is an independent journalist based in Cairo. For eight years
he worked as a producer and correspondent for the TV/radio
news hour Democracy Now! In 2011, he returned to
Egypt to cover the revolution. Since then, he has reported
for a number of print and broadcast outlets from across the
region, including Egypt, Libya, Palestine, Syria, Yemen, and
elsewhere. He received an Izzy Award for outstanding
achievement in independent media for his coverage of the
Egyptian revolution and an Emmy award for his coverage of
the Trump administration’s Muslim travel ban. He is
currently an editor and reporter at Mada Masr, Egypt's
leading independent media outlet.
This event is free and
open to the public! Copies of the book will be available for
sale. Masks encouraged.

Houston, Waldorf Astoria Ballroom (2nd floor)

Annual Lecture in Ottoman
History “Ottoman Culture and the Growth of Civility,
c. 1600-1800”
The Arab-American Educational Foundation Center for
Arab Studies at University of Houston
Please join us this Thursday (04/14) at 6:00pm for
the 2022 Annual Lecture in Ottoman History “Ottoman
Culture and the Growth of Civility, c. 1600-1800”
presented by Dr. James Grehan (Portland State
University)!
Event description: "An earlier generation of
historians once wrote of the seventeenth and
eighteenth centuries as a period in which the
Ottoman Empire sank into a long ‘decline’ that
overtook both state and society. Few historians
today accept this dismissive view, but they have
struggled to replace it with more compelling
narratives, often because they confine themselves to
narrow questions of religion and politics. Taking a
less traveled path, this talk will explore the
history of manners. This fresher perspective will
reveal how Ottoman culture, particularly in the
towns, underwent a noticeable expansion of ‘polite’
society during this period. Having rid ourselves of
tired old images of corruption and decay, we can
then place this Ottoman experience in a new light
and see how it matched cultural transformations that
were taking place across the ‘early modern’ world."
Dr. James Grehan is a renowned professor of Ottoman
history at Portland State University who specializes
in the early modern and modern Middle East. Dr.
Grehan is the author of Twilight of the Saints:
Everyday Religion in Ottoman Syria and Palestine
(2014) and Everyday Life and Consumer Culture in
Eighteenth-Century Damascus (2007).

International Studies at Middlebury College.
Date: Thursday, March 3, 2022
Time: Reception at 5:30 pm followed by the
lecture at 6:00 pm
Location: University of Houston,
Stephen Power Farish Hall (FH), Room 213, 3657
Cullen Blvd., Houston, TX 77204
Focusing on the technology of the paratext—glossaries,
introductions, prefaces, notes, forewords and
afterwords—this lecture examines how, in the
post-WWII period, publishers relied on paratexts to
entice English readers, who by and large were
uninterested in Arabic authors and their work.
Materializing hand-in-hand with a growing corpus of
Arabic literature in translation, paratexts serve an
integral role in promoting Arabic literature in a
publishing industry heavily influenced by foreign
policy in the Middle-East.
Dima Ayoub, Ph.D. (McGill University) is an
Assistant Professor of Arabic in Middlebury College,
where she is a C.V. Starr Junior Faculty Fellow in
International Studies and the former director of the
Middle East studies program. Her book manuscript
Paratext and Power: Modern Arabic Literature in
Translation rewrites the social and cultural history
of modern Arabic literature in translation by
centering the role of paratexts in addition to
publishers, translators, and writers. Dr. Ayoub’s
work connects the fields of Digital Humanities with
studies of Arabic and comparative literature – where
she has developed a digital archive of modern Arabic
literature in English, French, German and Spanish
translation.
This event is free and open to the public. Masks
encouraged.
